Through the unflinching medium of spray paint stenciling, Ryan unearths and examines unsettling but important conversations about the stigma of mental illness. His goal is to normalize recognition and treatment of mental health in black communities. Using repeated symbolism and autobiographical elements, his work addresses the reality that people of color are more likely to suffer in silence. Doing so, he navigates his own upbringing as an African American struggling with mental illness.
